This is yet another instance of Apple users getting a feature that was actually a bug correction, but since it has been awaited for such a long time, it seems like a big deal. The issue first surfaced when the iPhone got Face ID. Due to some glitch in the software, the area around the notch wasn't accurately measured. This meant that even if there was plenty of space, the UI didn't feature a battery percentage number.
This, despite the fact that there was still a battery indicator icon in the same place, with plenty of space inside to feature a simple number. Apple users have been asking the company to fix this bug for quite some time, and it is only now that the company has decided to take a look at it.
The company first addressed the problem when they previewed iOS 16, and now an iOS update called 16.1 is actually bringing the same to users with Face ID systems. Since this was an ongoing issue, the patch will be rolled out to previous generation iPhones as well, including the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 Mini, and iPhone 13 Mini. While this certainly isn't a revolutionary update, it is still one more bug that users can finally forget about.
