OPPO Under-Screen Camera Technology Unveiled

Next-Generation AI Supported Tech

The leading global smart device brand OPPO has unveiled its under-screen camera (USC) technology to be implemented in its smartphones. With a combination of its proprietary AI algorithms and groundbreaking hardware innovation, the USC technology places the front-facing camera under the screen in an incredibly discreet manner, without compromising on either screen quality or camera image quality.

OPPO-Under-Screen-Camera-Technology

With innovative and reliable advances during the development process, OPPO has managed to circumvent the key pain areas of under-screen camera technology such as inconsistent display quality above the camera position, substandard front camera image quality caused by obstruction along with reliability and quality issues. These advances have enabled OPPO’s under-screen camera solution to become seamless and revolutionary.

With OPPO's new under-screen camera technology come a host of other new technologies as well.

Innovative pixel technology: By shrinking the size of each pixel and maintaining the number of pixels, the technology manages to ensure a 440 PPI high-quality display even in the front camera area.

Transparent Wiring and new design: OPPO has replaced traditional display wiring with a wiring system that is transparent and up to 50% less in terms of width which results in higher display quality and a more fluid user experience.

Improved colour and brightness control: As opposed to the current industry standard of using a one-pixel circuit driving two pixels ("1-to-2") in the screen area above the camera, OPPO, using its proprietary screen technology has introduced a solution with each pixel circuit driving only one pixel. ("1-to-1"). Combined with OPPO’s precise Algorithmic Compensation Technology, this allows the chromaticity and brightness of the entire screen to be accurately controlled with a deviation of about 2%.

The combination of the above-mentioned technologies not only creates a more seamless under-screen camera experience but also increases its lifespan by up to 50%.

OPPO’s U.S. Research Institutes has developed an array of AI imaging algorithms – including diffraction reduction, HDR, and AWB in order to reduce the negative effects common in under-screen cameras which include image glare and blurry images. By training it with the help of tens of thousands of images, the OPPO AI diffraction reduction model controls the diffraction at the light source enabling users to capture more defined and natural-looking pictures.

OPPO has invested heavily and come up with three generations of under-screen camera technology to date in order to keep up with the consumer demand for higher screen-to-body ratios and has over 200 patents in the process. OPPO has made further contributions toward the development of the under-screen camera technology by submitting its first proposed standards to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in 2020.

There were seven key technical metrics mentioned in the proposal which included display transmittance, reflectance, uniformity, Gamma correction, colour shift, and brightness decay.

OPPO aims to continue developing and perfecting the under-screen camera technology for a more immersive and fluid user experience and higher consumer satisfaction.
