Ubuntu Pro Launched

For Enthusiast Users And Large Organizations

Canonical has announced the general release of Ubuntu Pro after a three-month beta testing phase. Ubuntu Pro offers improved, timely CVE patching and compliance with a number of regulations, including HIPAA and PCI-DSS. A wide range of consumers will be able to access it, and it promises to be extremely affordable or, in some cases, free.

The Beta-Testing

Since October of last year, numerous well-known corporations, including NVIDIA, Google, and VMWare, have all participated in the beta testing of Ubuntu Pro.

Benefits

Subscribers to the Pro edition will have access to an additional 23,000 packages in addition to the 10-year security coverage and optional technical support that Ubuntu customers already receive. Numerous toolchains and programmes, such as Node.js, Python, Rust, and WordPress, are covered in that.

FIPS-certified cryptographic packages, which are typically required for federal governments and other companies subject to compliance regimes like FedRAMP, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS, will be accessible to Pro users as part of the package.

Price & Availability

Pricing of the Ubuntu Pro varies by use case and includes a 30-day free trial. Workstations cost $25 annually, while servers cost $500 annually. Ubuntu claims that the hourly pricing structure on public cloud markets like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud is about 3.5% of the typical underlying computation cost.

Ubuntu Pro is still free to use for individuals and small-scale businesses with up to five workstations, just like it was during the beta stage. Official members of the Ubuntu community can use Pro on up to fifty machines. Since the release of 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus in April 2016, Pro will be accessible to all LTS versions.
