Western Digital and Sony Release First Officially Licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5

WD & SonyWestern Digital and Sony have teamed up to deliver the first official PlayStation-licensed M.2 SSD for the PS5. The SSD is officially designated as “WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD for PS5 Consoles”, and it provides gamers with the ability to expand the high-speed storage capacity of their console. In addition, it also gives them the ability to play both PS5 games and PS4 games directly from the drive.

To make this happen, Western Digital has specially optimized the drive for the newest-generation console through hundreds of hours of rigorously testing with some of the most graphic-rich titles across various genres. The drive’s attached heatsink also makes installation quicker with its all-in-one design. This means that gamers can cut down on long load times with PCIe Gen4 technology, reaching up to 7000MB/s read speeds.

To help future-proof the drive against next-gen storage-intensive AAA titles, the WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD comes in high-capacity sizes of 1TB and 2TB and is available for purchase exclusively at Best Buy and on the Western Digital online store.
